The Social Housing development in Selangor, Malaysia, is designed to enhance the lives of lower-income community members. The design approach adapts typical apartment community features to a social housing scale.
This social affordable housing development is envisioned as a contemporary waterfront community that balances architectural quality, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity. The master plan organizes a series of mid- to high-rise residential towers along a landscaped waterfront promenade, maximizing natural daylight, cross ventilation, and scenic views while creating an active public realm. The buildings feature clean modern lines, generous balconies, lightweight roof canopies, and extensive glazing, giving the development a distinctive yet timeless identity. A palette of glass, aluminium, textured concrete, and stone creates a durable, low-maintenance façade suitable for a tropical climate.
The planning prioritizes people over vehicles by incorporating pedestrian-friendly streets, shaded walkways, cycling paths, and interconnected green spaces. Public plazas, playgrounds, community gardens, retail spaces, and multipurpose halls encourage interaction among residents, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. Ground floors are designed with active frontages to enhance safety, accessibility, and social engagement throughout the day.
Sustainability is integrated through passive design strategies, including building orientation, sun-shading roof forms, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient systems that reduce operational costs for residents. The development also promotes mixed-income living by providing high-quality, affordable homes within an attractive urban environment. Overall, the architectural style combines modern tropical design with functional planning, creating a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant neighbourhood that enhances quality of life while supporting long-term environmental and social sustainability.
